The most recent professional baseball team from Union Springs, AL was the Union Springs Redbirds. The former Union Springs Springers changed their name in 1938 to the Redbirds. The Redbirds finished tied for third in the six-team Alabama-Florida League at 70-60, falling in the playoffs to the Troy Trojans. RF Steve Summerhill (.362/~.414/.495) led the league in average and RBI (108) and was second in doubles (33); he also stole 21 bases. Joining him on the All-Star team were C George Waldron (.308/~.349/.463, tied for 2nd with 13 homers) and LF Bob Jones (.318/~.391/.448). 3B Mel Serafine (.301/~.396/.473) led the AFL with 37 doubles. The top hurler was Dick Baird (15-10, 2.47).
