Biographical Information[edit]

Ulli Wermuth has played and coached in Germany. His brother Peter Wermuth has been a baseball executive.

Wermuth played one game for Germany in the 1997 European Junior Championship but did not bat. He was 1 for 1 with a run that year for the Mainz Athletics in his debut in Bundesliga-1. He was 1 for 4 with a run and a RBI in the 1998 European Junior Championship. With Mainz in '98, he went 1 for 19 with a walk, 3 steals and 5 HBP. In the 1999 European Juniors, he was a regular for Germany, going 3 for 20 with 3 steals, 5 walks and 5 runs. He hit .333/.422/.359 in 19 games for the 1999 Athletics.

In 2000, Ulli became a starter for Mainz and produced at a .303/.432/.449 clip with 37 runs in 26 games. He was 6th in the southern Bundesliga-1 in runs. During 2001, he batted .273/.456/.256 with 16 walks, 10 hit-by-pitch, 29 runs and 11 steals in 13 tries over 28 contests, then hit .421 with 7 runs in 5 games in the playoffs. He tied for 6th in steals, tied for second in HBP and tied for 6th in runs.

Wermuth struggled (3 for 25, HR, 4 BB, 4 HBP, 5 SB) for Mainz in 2002. In 2003, he did not play in Germany. He played for Whittier College in 2004 and also was with Frankfurst 1860 in the Bundesliga-2. In 2005, he was with Whittier and back with Mainz for the first time in three years (4 for 28, 6 BB, 9 R in 13 G). He split 2006 between Whittier and Mainz (6 for 19, 2 2B, 4 HBP). He finished his Whittier 4th in career hit-by-pitch (21).

With Mainz in 2007, he was 7 for 40 with a double and four walks, backing up Mike Larson in LF and Sascha Lutz in CF. He hit .364/.500/.455 with 11 runs in 13 postseason games, though, to help the Athletics win their first title. He was 1 for 4 with a walk and two hit-by-pitch for Mainz in the 2008 European Cup. That year, he made the transition to coaching, both for Mainz and for the German Baseball Academy. He also became a scout for the Houston Astros.

In 2011, Wermuth became head coach (manager in US terms) of the Mainz Athletics. He coached for the German national team in the 2014 European Championship.
