Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher Tyler Payne was the 265th and last player to make his major league debut during the 2021 season, when he was called upon to pinch-hit for P Alec Mills in the 5th inning of the Chicago Cubs' game against the St. Louis Cardinals on October 3rd, the season's last day. He struck out against Jake Woodford, then stayed in the game at catcher for the final two innings before the game was ended by rain in the top of the 8th, with the Cubs 3-2 winners. He had been added to the roster only a couple of days earlier when regular catcher Willson Contreras was injured, after spending most of the season in AA with the Tennessee Smokies, where he hit .231 in 59 games.
