Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Tyler Jay was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft. He soon signed for just under $3.9 million and then made his debut with the Fort Myers Miracle, going 0-1 with a 3.93 ERA in 19 appearances.

He never really managed to get going in the minor leagues, and his progression was hampered by a rare medical condition, eosinophilic esophagitis, an inflammation of the esophagus that prevented him from swallowing properly and led him to lose significant weight. Still, he did not give up on his baseball dreams, but by 2022 he was pitching in the independent Frontier League, with the Joliet Slammers, a team managed by Daniel Schlereth, another former top draft pick whose pitching career had been a disappointment. Yet, within two years, he had found his way back not only to the affiliated minor leagues, but had so impressed the New York Mets that he was called up to the major league team on April 10, 2024. He made his long awaited major league debut the next day, pitching the final two innings of a 16-4 win over the Atlanta Braves and allowing one run on five hits.
