Biographical Information[edit]

Ty Waller, whose middle name is "Tyrone", played four seasons in the majors. The name "Ty" didn't help him as some fans thought he was being touted as the next Ty Cobb.

His best year was 1981, when the Chicago Cubs were a laughingstock (literally, as Johnny Carson was making nightly jokes about them), going 38-65. Waller was seen as a great new prospect, slugging .451 on a team that slugged only .340. He hit .268 on a team that hit .236.

His first name is sometimes spelled "Tye".

Waller went to Hoover High School and San Diego City College. Of his four children, three are triplets. He played eleven years in pro ball, from 1977 to 1987.

Waller spent 19 years in the San Diego Padres organization before coming to the Oakland Athletics. He began coaching in the minor league with the Spokane Indians in 1988 and was the Padres' minor league outfield and baserunning instructor from 1989-1993. He managed in 1994, then was the Padres bullpen coach in 1995. Waller was then San Diego's coordinator of minor league instruction from 1997-1999 and director of player development from 2000-2005. He returned to the majors as the Padres first base coach in 2006.

Waller became first base coach for the Oakland Athletics in 2007, split 2008 between first base and third base, then was the bench coach in 2009 and 2010. He returned to coaching first base in 2011, staying until the end of the 2015 season.

His brothers, Reggie Waller and Kevin Waller, played in the minor leagues. His nephews, Gerric Waller (also spelled "Garrick") and Derric Waller, played in the minor leagues as well.

Ty and Red Waller are the only major leaguers (through 2008) with the last name "Waller".
