Biographical Information[edit]
OF/1B Trey Cabbage was originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 4th round of the 2015 amateur draft from a high school in Rutledge, TN. He played in the Twins minor league system until 2021. He had never played higher than Class A when the COVID-19 pandemic cost him the 2020 season, then he returned in 2021 to hit .264/.346/.535 in 108 games between the Class A Cedar Rapids Kernels and AA Wichita Wind Surge. He hit 27 homers and drove in 82 runs that year, so it's a bit of a surprise that the Twins did not make more of an effort to retain him, as he was finally showing signs that he was a prospect.
He signed with the Los Angeles Angels before the 2022 season but played only 30 games that year with the Rocket City Trash Pandas of the Southern League, hitting .327 with 10 homers before an injury ended his season. To make up for lost time, he played in the Mexican Pacific League that winter, with the Tomateros de Culiacan. In 2023, he hit .306 in 107 games for the Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League, with 30 homers and 89 RBIs, in addition to being successful in 32 of 35 stolen base attempts. He got his first taste of the majors that July, hitting .208 in 22 games. After three consecutive very good seasons with the bat, he seemed due to get an extended look with the Angels the following season, even if at 27 he was old for a prospect, but on January 31, 2024 the Angels traded him to divisional rivals the Houston Astros in return for pitcher Carlos Espinosa, who was still in Class A.
