Biographical Information[edit]

Lefthanded pitcher Travis Ott was selected out of high school in the 25th round of the 2013 amateur draft by the Washington Nationals. In his first year of professional baseball, he went 3-0, 4.03 in 10 games for the GCL Nationals of the Gulf Coast League, logging 29 innings. In 2014, he started the year with the Auburn Doubledays of the New York-Penn League, where he was 1-2, 3.05 in 10 starts, before being promoted to the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League in mid-August. The 19-year-old was hit hard at the higher level, putting up an ERA of 7.59 in 3 starts, but then again he was almost three years younger than the average player in the circuit. Between the two teams, his record was 1-4, 3.93, with 45 strikeouts in 55 innings.

On December 17, 2014, he and OF Steven Souza, the International League Player of the Year, were traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in return for two former first-round picks, Joe Ross and Trea Turner. Souza was slated to start in the Rays' outfield in 2015, but Ott was more of a long-term project.
