Biographical Information[edit]

Martin "Toots" Coyne played one game in the major leagues, on September 28, 1914. He was at third base for four innings and had two plate appearances for the Philadelphia Athletics. He was 19 years old at the time.

He may have been named "Toots" after Toots Shultz, a high-profile prospect who came to the big leagues in 1911 after having been touted as a soon-to-be star. Schultz played for the Philadelphia Phillies, based across town from Coyne's Athletics. Shultz was of German ancestry and Coyne was half-German. After baseball he became an automobile salesman. [1]

Coyne was from St. Louis, MO, and his one big league game came when the Athletics were in St. Louis to play the St. Louis Browns.
