Biographical Information[edit]
Tony John was a long-time scout.
John, the son of Syrian immigrants, played for the Standard Oil Essos as a catcher beginning in 1938. He became player-manager in 1949, but never played in the minors. He was a scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers starting in 1959, signing Joe Beckwith and Ken Howell. A newspaper article in 1981 mentioned that Beckwith was the lone major leaguer John had signed to that point though numerous MLB stars came out of his territory; it said that John had given positive reviews for many of the players but that other teams grabbed them before LA.
