Biographical Information[edit]
Tony Hinkle won over 1,000 games as a college coach.
Hinkle played football, basketball and track, but not baseball in college. He was All-America in basketball in 1920. He was athletic director at Butler University for almost 40 years and coached their basketball (560-392), football (165-99-13) and baseball (335-309-5) teams. He coached baseball in 1921-1927, 1933-1941 and 1946-1970. He missed World War II as he was serving in the US Navy. He coached Oral Hildebrand most notably in baseball. In 1929, he led Butler to a national title in basketball. In 1965, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The Butler arena was named the Tony Hinkle Memorial Fieldhouse in his honor; the movie Hoosiers was filmed here. In 2010-2011, Butler made two straight NCAA title games, following the lead of Hinkle's upset-minded 1929 team, but fell short in their bid to duplicate his success.
