Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Tommy Sewell, after two years at the University of Alabama, was signed by the Chicago Cubs in 1927. Sewell made his debut and his finale with the Cubs on June 21, 1927. He appeared in one game, had one at-bat, with no hits and that was it for the 21 year old in the major leagues. He would spend the rest of his five seasons in the minor leagues.

Tommy was then assigned to the Reading Keystones of the International League where he spent the rest of his first season appearing in 72 games, 51 of them at the hot-corner spot, making 18 errors in 150 chances and ended the year with just an .880 fielding percentage. Sewell hit decent, coming up with a .278 average, with 76 hits in 72 games.

The following season Sewell would have his best year with the bat, hitting at a .304 clip in a split season year where he had 79 games with the Bridgeport Bears of the class A Eastern League and appeared in 26 outings for the Reading club again. Sewell would spend just three more seasons in pro baseball. In 1929-30 Tommy was with the Springfield Ponies of the Eastern League for both seasons, hitting .280 and .278, respectfully.

Tommy's last season was up and he spent it in the Eastern League with the New Haven Bulldogs and the Springfield team again, hitting at a combined .265 average in 108 games and playing the second-base spot with both clubs, he fielded at a .978 percentage. Sewell chose to end his pro baseball career after the 1931 season and ended his five year run with a minor league record of 572 game appearances, hitting .280 with 629 base-hits in 2,245 at-bats. He fielded his infield positions at a .955 percentage.

After baseball Sewell became the manager of a Montgomery, AL radio station until his accidental death by drowning in Lake Jordan, just north of Montgomery. His death occured on July 30, 1956. Thomas Wesley Sewell was fifty years of age.
