Biographical Information[edit]
Tommy McKenzie was a long-time amateur star in Canada.
McKenzie played in the Intercounty Baseball League from 1960-1980, the first six years with the London Majors and the rest with the Kitchener Panthers. He won a batting title at .446 in 1970 and took MVP honors, then repeated the batting championship at .434 a year later. He was a 12-time All-Star as a player then won six more All-Star nods as manager, setting the IBL records for All-Star selections.
The shortstop made the first Team Canada, in the 1967 Pan American Games. He remained with Canada for the 1970 Amateur World Series, 1971 Amateur World Series, 1971 Pan American Games and was with them for the 1979 Pan American Games, the only original Team Canada member left at that point. He also played in one Amateur World Series.
Tommy also starred in Canadian football, being MVP of the 1963 Ontario Rugby Football League. He taught and coached at Kitchener Collegiate Institute and Eastwood Collegiate Institute, guiding eight high school football champs and six high school basketball titles.
