Biographical Information

Tom Sowinski played as high as AA then became a coach.

Sowinski was 30-2 in high school and was All-City MVP twice. He set St. John's University records for wins and shutouts (7) in a season and went 41-7 in college. In the 1968 College World Series, he was 2-0 with a shutout (against Harvard) to win All-Tournament honors; Bill Lee was the other pitcher picked. The Los Angeles Dodgers took him in the 25th round of the 1968 amateur draft, the second college pitcher they selected that year.

Making his pro debut with the Tri-City Atoms, Sowinski was 5-3 with a 4.91 ERA. His 8 homers allowed tied Paul de Metropolis for the Northwest League lead. In 1969, the right-hander improved to 7-1, 2.22 with a save for the Daytona Beach Dodgers. He walked only 11 in 89 innings. Had he qualified, he would have been fifth in the Florida State League in ERA. He ended his playing career with the 1970 Albuquerque Dodgers, posting a 3-4, 4.57 mark.

Tom was pitching coach for Adelphi University from 1985-1999, going to four NCAA Division II College World Series. He was head coach at Queensborough Community College in 2000. From 2001-2005, Sowinski was pitching coach at Manhattan College. He then did private coaching and clinics for a few years, before being hired as head coach at Queens College. He won 18 games in 2010, his first year there, and remained through 2013, a year before his passing.
