Singer grew up in Pittsburgh and recalled watching Bill Mazeroski hitting the winning homer in the 1960 World Series on TV. A sportswriter since the 1970s, he was one of the first writers hired by MLB.com in 2001. He covered the Los Angeles Angels for them and in 2012 became the Pittsburgh Pirates beat writer for MLB.com, covering his hometown team.
