Biographical Information[edit]

Not much is known about Tom Ryder. SABR researchers in 2002 tracked down his birthplace and place of death in Dubuque, IA.

He played for the St. Louis Maroons in 1884, the team that finished in first place during the only season of the Union Association. Ryder mostly played left field, a position that was usually manned by either Buttercup Dickerson or Henry Boyle. Among others, pitcher Charlie Sweeney also played there on occasion as did the 18-year-old Perry Werden.

"TOM RYDER, of Dubuque, has been engaged . . . He is a heavy left-handed batsman and once played with (the) Indianapolis Club. He will play centre field when Rowe Is pitching." - Sporting Life, July 23, 1884
