Biographical Information[edit]

Thomas Johnson, Jr. was the son of the former president of the Virgin Islands Baseball Federation. Growing up on St. Croix, he was a catcher. Tom was in the Chicago Cubs organization from 1979 to 1984, a couple of years behind Jody Davis, the starter on the 1984 NL East champs. That may be one reason why he played first base in the minors, although people on St. Croix thought that he should have been more of a take-charge guy behind the plate, and that he sought to play other positions instead of concentrating on catching.

Johnson also got to play with the Ponce Leones in the Puerto Rican Winter League, thanks to the connections of Elmo Plaskett.
