Biographical Information[edit]
Tom Hughes attended the University of Texas in 1928 and 1929 (he was All-Conference in 1929) and then came up to the majors in September of 1930 at age 22. He hit well, posting a line of .373/.413/.508 in 59 at-bats.
A centerfielder, his range and fielding percentage were not as good as Liz Funk, who was the regular at the position for the Detroit Tigers that year. In 1931, Hub Walker was the regular.
He was at the University of Texas at the same time as Pinky Higgins, and the two broke into the majors the same year, 1930.
He is one of four major league players (through 2019) named Tom Hughes.
