Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Tom Hatch, who also goes by his full name Thomas Hatch, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 3rd round of the 2016 amateur draft, out of Oklahoma State University, where he pitched in the 2016 College World Series. He had previously been a 32nd round selection, by the Colorado Rockies, coming out of high school in 2013. On July 30, 2019, the Cubs traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays in return for veteran reliever David Phelps.

Hatch made the Blue Jays' roster at the start of the 2020 season, because of the unavailability of veteran starter Chase Anderson, and was tabbed to start the team's third game of the season on July 26th against the Tampa Bay Rays. It was planned in advance that he and another young pitcher acquired in a mid-season trade the year before, lefty Anthony Kay, would split the first five or six innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. The plan worked in that Hatch and Kay managed to hold the Rays to 1 run over 5 innings, with Tom not giving up a hit in 2 1/3, although closer Ken Giles eventually blew a 4-2 lead in the 9th. Still, the young pitcher had made an excellent first impression.
