- Born April 2, 1948 in Detroit, MI USA
Biographical Information[edit]
Tom Gage is a sportswriter who was the beat writer covering the Detroit Tigers for the Detroit News from 1979 to 2015. He was named the recipient of the J. G. Taylor Spink Award by the BBWAA in late 2014 and received the award at the 2015 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
Gage actually began his carer with the New Orleans Times-Picayune in the early 1970s before moving to the Detroit News in 1976. He was a sportswriter for the paper for 39 years, including 35 as the Tigers beat writer. He retired from the paper in March of 2015, a month after being removed from the assignment. His demotion, ironically, came just a few weeks after his winning the most prestigious award in the profession. He then became a columnist for Fox Sports Detroit, but the gig ended three months later when Fox Sports dismissed all of its regional web sportswriters.
