Biographical Information

James "Tiny" Chaplin pitched parts of four big league seasons, earning 10 of his 15 career wins with the 1936 Boston Bees. According to Bill Lee's Baseball Necrology, he was killed at the "height" of his baseball career when a car in which he was a passenger hit a car that was stalled on the road south of National City, CA. According to the New York Times Associated Press report of March 26, 1939, Chaplin and a female driver were returning from Tijuana, Baja California. The Times reported that the driver sideswiped a parked car (although the death certificate says that the vehicle crashed into the rear of a parked car) and Chaplin was thrown into the windshield, which shattered and severed his jugular vein.
