Tim Cox led the Gulf Coast League in strikeouts in 2005 and was Claxton Shield Pitcher of the Year in 2008.

Cox was signed by the Boston Red Sox in September of 2004 after being scouted by Jon Deeble. He debuted in the US in 2005, going 3-1 with a save and a 2.19 ERA for the GCL Red Sox and striking out 56 while walking only 7 and giving up just 36 hits in 49 1/3 IP. He was promoted to the Lowell Spinners and was 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA there. He tied teammate Yulkin German for the Gulf Coast League lead in strikeouts and was 6th in the GCL in ERA.

He was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in his first Claxton Shield, pitching for the 2006 New South Wales Patriots.

In 2006, Cox was very sharp for the Greenville Drive, going 5-6 with a 2.80 ERA mostly out of the bullpen. He struck out 82 and walked only 16 in 103 innings. He also appeared briefly for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Had he qualified, he would have ranked 4th in the South Atlantic League in ERA.

Cox was with Australia for the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, posting a 1-1, 4.50 record with 13 strikeouts in 10 innings. The youngest hurler for the 2007 Lancaster JetHawks, the 20-year-old struggled, with a 1-1, 6.18 record and .345 opponent batting average. Cox retired after being hit by a line drive.

Cox kept on pitching in Australia, though. In the 2008 Claxton Shield, he was 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA, striking out 20 and allowing 8 hits in 18 innings. He was less successful in the postseason, but only slightly. In the final game, he allowed only one run to the Western Australia Heelers. Unfortunately, it cost him the game as Mitch Graham's homer handed a win to Mark Kelly, who threw a shutout.
