Biographical Information[edit]
Timothy Brewer from St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands was selected by the Colorado Rockies as a 17-year-old pitcher in the 35th round of the 2005 amateur draft. There was a problem, though: Brewer remained in the 11th grade and was thus ineligible. According to the Virgin Islands Daily News, a misunderstanding arose based on information gathered at a baseball clinic run by former Seattle Mariners prospect Ellerton Maynard.
The result of the foul-up was that the Rockies forfeited the draft pick, but Timothy did not lose his eligibility for his senior year or the 2006 draft. His mother, Eurita Smith, said, "After school he can do what he wants, but not this year." The California Angels then made him their 50th-round selection in 2006.
The "draft and follow" candidate never played in the minors, but he continued to play at home. He was a pitcher/first baseman for the Virgin Islands in the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.
