Thomas Casey
Thomas Casey
- Bats Unknown, Throws Left
Biographical Information[edit]
Thomas Casey, also known as Tommy Casey and sometimes as Bill Casey, pitched one game for the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association on August 17, 1887. He pitched one inning and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits. He had been with the team for some time before his debut, but apparently hurt his arm in his sole appearance and never pitched again.
Very little is known about Casey, except for the fact he was left-handed and was said to be 17 years old when signed by the Athletics. He was previously employed in a brickyard. There were at least two youngsters of that name listed in the Philly city directory at the time, the most likely candidate being one Thomas Casey, son of the Irish-born James Casey, himself born in Philly in 1868 (which would have made him a more likely 19 at the time of his mound appearance). No corroboration has yet been found that this was indeed the young pitcher.
