Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Thairo Estrada was one of a number of young players who were brought up from the minor leagues by the New York Yankees in April 2019 when the team was decimated by a slew of injuries that put half of the regular roster on the injured list. He made his debut as a pinch-hitter on April 21st when he pinch-hit for Mike Ford, another recent call-up, in the 10th inning of a game against the Kansas City Royals. With the score tied at 6-6, the first two batters, Mike Tauchman and Giovanny Urshela, had drawn walks against Jake Diekman. The Royals brought in reliever Ian Kennedy to face Thairo, who laid down a successful sacrifice bunt, advancing the two runners; Austin Romine followed with a single that ended the game.

He was purchased by the San Francisco Giants before the start of the 2021 season and surprised by hitting .273 and slugging .479 in 52 games. He became the starter at second base in 2022, playing a total of 140 games and hitting .260 with 14 homers and 62 RBIs. He had another productive season in 2023 when he hit .271 in 120 games, with another 14 homers and 49 RBIs. His OPS+ was above 100 in all three seasons in San Francisco.
