Biographical Information[edit]
Tex Shirley, who pitched five years in the majors in the 1940s, was part of the only St. Louis Browns team that went to the World Series, the 1944 edition. He went 5-4 that year and threw two scoreless innings in Game 4 of the Series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Shirley had control issues, with 290 walks given up in 446 2/3 innings in the majors.
He pitched for the Springfield Rifles in the Eastern League in 1943, between his two major league stints. He went 13-3 for the Granby Red Sox of the independent Provincial League in 1949.
He is one of five major leaguers with the last name Shirley (through 2007).
