Biographical Information

Tacks Neuer, who came to the major leagues for one year with the New York Highlanders in 1907, had a pretty good if short major league career. He appeared in 7 games and pitched 54 innings. Three of his outings were shutouts, including his major league debut on August 28th against the Boston Red Sox. His 2.17 ERA was the best of all the pitchers on the team. Tacks gave up some unearned runs, but then so did everyone else - around a third of the runs the team gave up were unearned.

Neuer was 30 in 1907, but he wasn't the oldest member of a staff which featured 34-year-old Al Orth and 33-year-old Jack Chesbro. The two of them had ERA's over 2.50 and gave up many unearned runs also. In spite of his very solid stint with New York, he never again pitched in the majors after that season.

He was the first of several players born in Fremont, Ohio, coming to the majors long before the rest of them.

Sporting Life of September 7, 1907 described Neuer as "wiry", and said that he had been at spring training in 1907 with the Philadelphia Phillies.
