As of 2005, the last professional baseball club in Temple, TX was the Temple Redlegs. They played one year, 1957, in the Big State League. A Cincinnati Reds affiliate managed by Al Barillari, they began the season as the Port Arthur Redlegs and moved to Temple on May 30. They finished third in the first half (33-28) and last in the latter half (15-28). With 499 runs, they had the weakest offense of any team to complete the season, though they also allowed the fewest (549). The Redlegs were 4th in attendance with 14,484 fans. Hitting very well in limited time was future big-league catcher Jesse Gonder (.340/~.404/.574 in 27 games).
