January 11: Today's featured birthday is that of Hank Fischer, who turns 85.
- 1931 - Lefty Grove wins the 1931 American League MVP Award after his seventh consecutive season leading the American League in strikeouts. He also led in ERA, victories, winning percentage and complete games during a 31-4 campaign.
- 1989 - The Kintetsu Buffaloes drop their fourth straight game to blow a three-games-to-none lead to begin the 1989 Japan Series. Isao Koda wins Game 7 by an 8-5 margin while three Yomiuri Giants batters homer.
- 1994 - Hiromi Makihara wins his second game of the 1994 Japan Series, 3-1, to give the Yomiuri Giants the Series in six games over the Seibu Lions. Henry Cotto homers, while Kimiyasu Kudoh takes the loss.
- 2001 - Bud Selig announces that Major League Baseball will be forced to contract by two teams by the beginning of the 2002 season. Selig's move will be countered by a lawsuit filed on behalf of the Minnesota Twins and the idea will be dropped.
- 2008 - The Phillies only need to play three innings to win the 2008 World Series as they conclude a rain-suspended Game 5. It is the second World Series title in franchise history. Cole Hamels (pictured) is named Series MVP.
