• 1978 - High-priced free agent Andy Messersmith separates his shoulder in a spring training game. Battling injury, he will go only 0-3 for the Yankees.
• 1985 - Former pitching star Denny McLain is convicted of racketeering, extortion, and cocaine possession in a Florida court and sentenced to 23 years in jail.
