- 1912 - At age 41, Iron Man McGinnity wins both halves of a doubleheader for the Newark Indians.
- 1947 - Though there are over two months to go, Ralph Kiner sets a new Pittsburgh Pirates record for homers with his 24th and 25th, breaking Johnny Rizzo's record. Kiner is aided by the addition of "Greenberg Gardens" to Forbes Field.
- 1960 - Jimmy Piersall (pictured) is ejected after going into a war dance to distract batter Ted Williams; it is his sixth ejection of the year.
- 1974 - Write-in All-Star Steve Garvey singles, doubles and wins the MVP Award in the 1974 All-Star Game.
- 2009 - Mark Buehrle tosses the 18th perfect game in major league history, stopping defending AL champion Tampa Bay.
