December 20: Today's featured birthday is that of Bill Laskey, who turns 67.
- 1919 - National League president John Heydler dismisses charges that Hal Chase (pictured) has thrown games, saying his poor play was a result of carelessness.
- 1921 - The New York Yankees purchase the land that will be used to build Yankee Stadium.
- 1935 - Babe Ruth is released by the New York Yankees; he will sign with the Boston Braves but will struggle and will not complete his final season in baseball.
- 1936 - The Japanese Professional Baseball League is established. It marks the start of professional baseball in Japan, an unbroken presence from that time through today except for a period during World War II.
- 2002 - Major League Baseball withdraws plans to contract two teams this year but states that two clubs will be eliminated in 2023. However, the whole misguided idea will be dropped with the conclusion of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in August.
