January 8: Today's featured birthday is that of Brian Boehringer, who turns 56.
- 1974 - Hank Aaron hits his 714th career homer in the majors. He takes Jack Billingham deep on Opening Day to tie Babe Ruth's MLB record.
- 1988 - Toronto's George Bell (pictured) becomes the first player to crack three homers on Opening Day. Bret Saberhagen surrenders all three in a 5-3 defeat for the Royals.
- 1994 - Tuffy Rhodes becomes the first player to hit home runs in his first three at-bats of the season, but his Cubs still lose 12-8. Rhodes will never establish himself a major-league slugger, but will become the all-time home run leader among foreign players in Nippon Pro Baseball.
- 2001 - Sammy Sosa hits his 500th career homer in the major leagues, becoming the first Dominican player to achieve that feat.
- 2004 - Korea Baseball Organization home run record holder Seung-yeop Lee hits his first home run in Nippon Pro Baseball in dramatic fashion. Lee hammers a pitch from Nagisa Arakaki out of Chiba Marine Stadium, becoming just the third player to do so.
