April 28: Today's featured birthday is that of Russ Morman, who turns 62.
- 1923 - The first major league game is played at Yankee Stadium with 74,217 fans in attendance. Babe Ruth hits a three-run homer while Bob Shawkey provides the pitching in a 4-1 win by the Yankees.
- 1946 - Jackie Robinson homers and singles three times as the first known African-American player in Organized Baseball in the 20th Century. The Montreal Royals rookie will go on to win the International League batting title.
- 1950 - Billy Martin (pictured) becomes the first player in MLB history with two hits in an inning in his debut game. Martin doubles against Mel Parnell in the 8th inning and singles against Al Papai later in the frame.
- 1956 - Former pitcher Eddie Rommel becomes the first major league umpire to wear glasses during a game.
- 1981 - The longest game in baseball history begins. 32 innings will be played before it is suspended and continued on a later date. The contest between the Rochester Red Wings and Pawtucket Red Sox features future Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. and Wade Boggs as the third basemen.
