Biographical Information

The son of Mike Matheny, outfielder Tate Matheny was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 23rd round of the 2012 amateur draft but did not sign, opting to attend Missouri State University instead. In 2015, the Boston Red Sox took him in the fourth round, and he made his pro debut that summer with the Lowell Spinners, hitting .181 in 52 games. In 2016, he spent the season with the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League, splitting his time between right field and center field. In 105 games, he hit .277/.324/.382 with 5 homers and 52 RBIs. He also scored 59 runs and stole 21 bases. His solid performance paved the way for him to get to make a few appearances with the major league team in Grapefruit League game as a spring training invitee in 2017, including one against his father's St. Louis Cardinals.

He had another solid season in 2017, with the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League, where he hit .266/.338/.408 in 114 games, with 7 homers and 46 RBIs. He also banged 27 doubles and 7 triples. That earned him another spring training invitation in 2018, where he once again got to play against his father and the Cardinals. He was headed to the AA Portland Sea Dogs that year.
