I moved this paragraph to the discussion page, where it is more apropos, and have revised it
Pete Hill's first name, birth date, and birth place have been called into question.
The birth day is listed as October 12 1882 on his draft registration card, the only documentation of Hill's birth date that was known to have been reviewed and signed by Hill himself.
Current evidence (in the form of a 1920 census listing, passenger logs from when he traveled between Cuba and the U.S., and the aforementioned draft registration) indicate that his first name was John instead of Joseph.
Additionally, he is listed as being born in Virginia in two contemporary sources, though their reliability is not certain. On one passenger list record, he gave his place of birth as "Buena Vista", with the state written as "Va" or "Pa". Buena Vista is a small town in suburban Pittsburgh, as well as a small town in western Virginia. Consensus from the chairs of SABR's Negro League Committee is that Pennsylvania is more likely, but could change with further supporting evidence. -- Couillaud 11:01, 23 April 2007 (EDT)
