And the number of MLB coaching positions continues to grow with assistant coach positions. I don't remember these in the 1980s or 1990s. Did they just start popping up in the last couple years? - --Mischa 11:28, 13 March 2012 (EDT)

Indeed, they're a new development. There is a limit in MLB on how many coaches can actually suit up for a game (6), which was instituted in the late 1970s, but there are ways around that by giving additional coaches other titles. They can't be on the bench in uniform during games, but can perform all sorts of other duties before and after. And coaches have become very cheap when compared to players. That's why the Rangers can hire what is basically a full-time coach to be Josh Hamilton's "accountability partner". His low salary is nothing compared to the investment they have in Josh, and the payoff resulting from his physical and mental well-being. --Philippe 11:44, 13 March 2012 (EDT)
