Talk:Frédéric Hanvi

From BR Bullpen

I don't get it - why the rush to sign European players who have done nothing impressive in their home countries? Hanvi hit .220 in France in 2007 and .133 in the European Junior Championship - why would anyone expect him to play well in the US minors? Jakub Sládek hit .200 in the Czech Republic in 2007 when good players hit .400 and teenage stars easily top .300. Again, why?

I understand players who have starred in their native countries and also fared well in international competition like Kai Gronauer or even a Dwayne Kemp but why guys like Hanvi or Sládek? - --Mischa 12:26, 23 May 2008 (EDT)

Usually, these are scout signings. The players selected project because of their body types or raw skills (e.g. a great throwing arm or blazing speed). The lack of success at a low level of competition means that they're a blank slate that can be totally re-shaped. I doubt this will work for hitters, but it might for the occasional pitcher. --Philippe 13:21, 23 May 2008 (EDT)
