Talk:Ed Charles
If you're wondering what it would be like to be trapped in the minor leagues because the big team just happened to be playing a hall of famer at your position, examine the record of Ed Charles. The Glider played behind Eddie Matthews in the Braves system for many years and was almost thirty when he got a chance to play for the A's. he certainly made the most of his late opportunity though he was argueably beyond his prime (one has to wonder---wasn't there anywhere the Braves could play Ed Charles??...could he have taken Chuck Cottier's place as a reserve infielder?? how about trying him in the outfield??) For five years only Brooks Robinson and Clete Boyer were better defensively at third in his league and Charles could hit and run...a very good offensive player stuck on a team with very little pitching...He got his chance in the sun when he was traded to the Mets late in his career and played in the World Series as a platoon third baseman for the Mets in their first World Series appearance...During the days of appreciation for Jackie Robinson (I think the fiftieth anniversary of Jackie's coming to the majors) Ed wrote a wonderful poem and gave a moving interview wherein he credited Robinson for making his dream, and so many others, come true... still one has to wonder...what if..he's had a 15 year career
Did he publish any books of poetry? - Mischa (talk) 14:35, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
