Dock's LSD no-hitter[edit]

My good friend was at Dock's no-hitter in San Diego. Aged 12 at the time, he recalls it this way:

"As usual we had migrated down to the plaza level seats from the upper deck or left field. We were sitting on the first base line, lined up with the plate and third base. Stargell hits his second dinger of the night to right field high above the 17' wall. I take off running from the home plate area, deke-out one octogenarian usher at the right field foul pole and retrieve the ball which has been sitting stationary between the seats for about a minute. The other 1,900 fans in attendance seemed uninterested."

1,900 people in attendance isn't far-fetched in those bad Padre years...though that game's actual attendance was 9,903--above that season's average of 7,946...worst in the N.L.

By the way, this was way before eBay. We played with that ball, like we did with many batting practice home run balls we caught, in our own style of "over the line" game. One extra note: I remember reading that when Dock, in L.A., suddenly realized he needed to get to San Diego for that night's game, he flew PSA Airlines. Cost of that flight in 1970? Nine dollars.

Also, this is a nicely expanded article. Maybe featured article material? - Mischa (talk) 20:05, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
