Biographical Information[edit]

Takeshi Ishii pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball and for the Japanese national team.

Ishii represented Japan in the 1981 Intercontinental Cup. The Seibu Lions drafted him in the second round of the 1982 NPB draft. Ishii only had 2 appearances in his rookie year, and he recorded a 4.60 ERA in 18 games in 1984. He was sent to the class-A San Jose Bees for part of the season, going 4-3 with two saves and a 3.53 ERA in 21 games, striking out 48 in 35 2/3 IP. One of his teammates there was Kimiyasu Kudoh, who would be one of Japan's greatest hurlers of the era. Back with Seibu, he lowered his ERA to 3.94 in the next season. In the 1985 Nippon Series, he relieved Kazuyuki Ono in Game 5, and pitched 4 1/3 innings and only allowed 2 runs (a two-run shot from Keiji Nagasaki). The Wakayama native improved and had a solid 2.50 ERA in 42 appearances. He pitched 1/3 of an inning in both Game 3 and Game 4 of the 1986 Nippon Series without allowing any hits. Ishii suffered a waist injury, so he only pitched 7 games in 1987. He was unable to come back from that injury, then announced his retirement after the 1988 season.

Overall, Ishii was 8-4 notched 4 saves with a 3.63 ERA and pitched 143 2/3 innings in 5 seasons in NPB.
