Biographical Information[edit]

In the 1991 spring Koshien, Takaya Hayashi became only the 9th player to homer in back-to-back at-bats in Koshien Tournament history when he went deep off of Osaka Toin High School. Hayashi was a 7th-round draft pick of the Daiei Hawks in 1991 NPB draft. He spent several years at ni-gun, making his Daiei debut in 1995 and going 1 for 10. He next showed up with the Hawks in 1999, hitting .2265/.321/.374 in 115 AB over 77 games, backing up Hiroki Kokubo and Shikato Yanagita at third base. The next season, he hit .274/.354/.397 in 73 AB over 53 games for his best offensive year. Down to 18 AB in 49 games in 2001, the defensive sub batted .222/.300/.389. He was then traded to the Nippon Ham Fighters for catcher Masanori Taguchi.

With the 2002 Fighters, Hayashi hit .252/.299/.411 in 163 AB and 66 games. He set career highs for at-bats, slugging, home runs (6), runs (18), doubles (6) and RBI (28) while backing up on the corner infield. He saw only limited time after that, going 2 for 7 in 4 games with the 2003 Fighters and 0 for 6 in 2004. Moving to the Chiba Lotte Marines, Takaya was 0 for 4 in 2005 and retired after the next year.

Overall, Hayashi had a .237/.306/.376 line in 396 AB and 263 games. He showed some pop with 12 homers and 57 RBI but struck out 108 times.
