Biographical Information

Sumner Bowman played three seasons in pro ball, including two in the majors. He was a pitcher who sometimes played outfield. Bowman pitched one game for the 1890 Phillies but was not signed by the club to a contract, according to Sporting Life. The Pittsburgh Alleghenys then signed him to a contract and used him in ten games. The following season, he was in 14 games with the Philadelphia Athletics of the American Association.

Sumner attended Penn, studied law, and became an attorney, practicing in New York and Pennsylvania. He was also an elected official, serving as Treasurer of the Borough of Williamstown, PA. [1] He served in the Army. [2] He is not to be confused with his contemporary, Bill Bowman, a catcher.
