Biographical Information

Stuart Howell was an Olympic pitcher.

Howell had a 3.37 ERA and .186 opponent average as a teenager with the Perth Heat in 1989-1990 but walked 9 in 10 2/3 and would not pitch for two years. Returning in 1992-1993, he was 1-1 with a save, a 4.19 ERA and .219 opponent average. With the Heat in 1993-1994, the righty went 0-1 with a save and a 5.09 ERA, while opponents batted .307.

Moving to the Canberra Bushrangers, Stuart was lit up in 1994-1995 (2-2, 9.87, .325 opponent average, 2.28 WHIP). In 1995-1996, he was 4-6 with a save, .223 opponent average and 3.90 ERA for the Gold Coast Cougars. He was third in the Australian Baseball League in lowest average allowed after Frankie Rodriguez and Damian Moss and was 5th in ERA (trailing Jon Deeble, Rodriguez, Simon Sheldon-Collins and Moss).

That strong winter earned him a spot with Australia for the 1996 Olympics. He allowed eight runs in 5 2/3 IP in the Atlanta Games, giving up 13 hits (4 homers) in 27 at-bats. Surprisingly, he was the middle man in the Australian staff in ERA, ahead of Andrew McNally, Sheldon-Collins and Micheal Nakamura. In 1996-1997, he closed out his career with a 8-4, 5.63 record for the Cougars, though opponents hit .302. He tied Kevin Millwood and John Challinor for third in the loop in wins, one behind co-leaders Phil Dale and Brandon Reed.

He had gone 15-14 with 3 saves and a 5.40 ERA in six seasons in the ABL.
