The Stockton Mariners were the first full-season class A farm team of the Seattle Mariners. They played in 1978 in Stockton, CA and were managed by Bobby Floyd. After a good 39-34 first half, they were worst in the California League in the second half, at 24-43. They were 7th of 8 teams in attendance (35,670). In an offense-friendly league and probably a pitching-friendly park, Stockton was last in runs scored (628, or 4.49 per game) while allowing the fewest (661, 4.72/game). The only hitter to make a major impact in Major League Baseball was Seattle's #1 draft pick of a year earlier, OF Dave Henderson. Henderson had a rough year, as he hit only .232/~.339/.342, struck out 100 times and made 14 errors (third-most of any outfielder). Karl Best (1-5, 4.73), Bob Stoddard (1-6, 5.47), Bryan Clark (0-4, 7.33) and Bud Anderson (12-8, 3.02) all had respectable big-league careers on the mound. Anderson was fourth in the league in ERA and first in complete games (16). The team's only All-Star was pitcher Jim Lewis, the league leader in ERA (2.12, .76 better than anyone else). Jim had a 12-11 record and also tied for the Cal League lead with five shutouts.
