Biographical Information[edit]

Jim Lewis pitched only a total of 11 games in the majors, but he spread these out over four seasons, with three different teams. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Mariners following the 1977 amateur draft and rose to the majors by the end of the 1979 season, giving up 7 runs in 2 1/3 innings in two outings. He resurfaced with the New York Yankees in 1982 and was beaten up again in his sole outing, giving up another 7 runs in just two-thirds of an inning. The next season, 1983, he was in 6 games for the Minnesota Twins, with no decisions and an ERA of 6.50. He went back to the minors for another spell and his final major league appearances came back with his original team, the Mariners, in 1985. His ERA was 7.71 in the two games he pitched that season, including his only major league start.

His career ended after the 1985 season, and was spent entirely in AAA starting in 1979. He was in double digits in wins six different times, including records of 12-11, 13-11, 12-6 and 15-9, the latter three all in AAA, but could never translate that success to the majors. His major league ERA was 8.77, while in the minors it was 3.86 in 9 seasons, inflated by playing for a long time in the Pacific Coast League which was very much a league dominated by hitters at the time.
