Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Steven Wilson was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 8th round of the 2018 amateur draft out of Santa Clara University. Six years earlier, he had been selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 35th round of the 2012 amateur draft coming out of high school. The unusually long delay between the two selections was due to the fact he not only completed all four seasons for which he was eligible at Santa Clara, but was also redshirted twice, as a freshman in 2013, and again as a senior in 2017 when he was recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Wilson reached the majors with the Padres early in the 2022 season and had a good first year, going 4-2, 3.06 in 50 games, all in relief except for one start, with one save and 53 strikeouts in 53 innings. He pitched four times in the postseason, for a total of 3 2/3 innings, with no decisions and 2 runs allowed, one on a solo homer by Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 4 of the NLCS on October 22nd. In 2023, he went 1-2, 3.91 in 52 games, logging another 53 innings and striking out 57. The Padres missed the postseason that year.

On March 13, 2024, just as the Padres were about to board a plane for South Korea for a season-opening series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he was included in a blockbuster deal that allowed San Diego to land ace pitcher Dylan Cease from the Chicago White Sox. Wilson was the sole major leaguer headed to the Windy City in the deal, joined by prospects Jairo Iriarte, Drew Thorpe and Samuel Zavala.
