Steven Hernandez
Steven Hernandez
Biographical Information[edit]
Steven Hernandez is a long-time coach in the Inland Empire area around San Bernardino, CA. He taught high school for 36 years and coached high school baseball for 26 of those years. Hernandez was the head coach at Fontana High School from 1980-1999 where he coached future big leaguers Greg Colbrunn and Chuck Carr. He later coached at Redlands East Valley High School from approximately 2003 through the 2008 season. Three of his players from Redlands reached the major leagues - Tyler Chatwood, Matt Andriese, and Tommy Hanson.
Hernandez started working with the Los Angeles Angels organization in 1998 as a volunteer scout. This gradually progressed to a part-time amateur scouting role which he continued through at least 2019. Since Hernandez had no professional playing experience himself, he felt hamstrung when trying to answer questions from prospective draftees and their families about what it was like to play minor league baseball. So, he decided to find out. He joined the AZL Angels in either 2009 or 2010 as a bullpen coach to experience the daily ups and downs of minor league baseball. In 2011 Hernandez returned home as a first base coach for the Inland Empire 66ers. Some sources indicate he coached first base every year from 2011-2021; others list him as a bullpen coach from 2013-2015. Hernandez was listed as a coach in 2022-2024.
