Biographical Information[edit]

Steve Ziem had considerable success in the minors, and came to the big leagues for two games, where he wasn't as successful. He had 51 victories in the minors and 53 saves. He had an 0-1 record in the majors.

Steve was born in Milwaukee, WI but attended high school and college in California. He was drafted twice before he agreed the third time (8th round of the 1983 Amateur Draft) to join the Atlanta Braves organization. His entire pro career was with the Braves.

Steve was an excellent hitter for a pitcher. The stats are not complete, but it appears he hit .267 in the minors.

Ziem was primarily a reliever in the minors. After going 6-4 with 6 saves in the rookie league in 1983 and 7-5 with 14 saves the next year split between A ball and AA ball in 1984, he struggled a bit in AA ball in 1985, although he had 13 saves.

He had another half season in AA ball in 1986 as a relier, but the other half of the year was spent with the AAA Richmond Braves, where he started all 15 of his appearances.

He started 1987 with Richmond, but due to an injury to a big leaguer, Steve was promoted to Atlanta for two appearances. In his first game, he got one out but gave up a hit and committed a balk, and took the loss when a run scored on an error, occurring after Ziem had been taken out in favor of another reliever. In his second game, he pitched two innings, giving up two runs.

Steve continued to pitch in the minors through 1990, most notably going 10-2 with 11 saves in 1989.
