Biographical Information

Steve Yerkes, who had a seven-year career in the major leagues primarily as a second baseman, is remembered as the player who scored the winning run in the 10th inning of the last game of the 1912 World Series.

Yerkes, born in Pennsylvania, attended the University of Pennsylvania and played on its baseball team in 1906. Afterwards, he left and played for several minor league teams before coming to the majors for a cup of coffee in 1909 at the age of 21.

He was with the Boston Red Sox for part of 1909 through part of 1914. His teammates there included Tris Speaker, Joe Wood, Duffy Lewis and Harry Hooper. 1914 was the same year that Babe Ruth made his debut with the team in July.

Yerkes, however, spent half of 1914 and all of 1915 in the Federal League. He then came back to the National League to finish out his major league career in 1916.

He became freshman baseball coach for Yale University in 1940. He also owned and ran a bowling alley.
