Biographical Information[edit]
Steve Toole pitched four years in the majors. In 1887, he went 14-10 for the Brooklyn Grays, a team that went 60-74, and was close to being the top winner on the team - although two other pitchers had 16 and 15 wins, they each appeared in far more games than Toole had.
Toole had times when he was a very good hitter. As a rookie in 1886 he hit .351 on a team where the top regular hit .280. In 1890 he hit .300 (in 6 games) on a team where the team average was .221.
He umpired one game in the National League in 1888 and then was a regular umpire in the American Association in 1890.
